DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT…
In making this film I felt I was learning both about Lorri Moore as well as the medium of filmmaking itself. My background is in the visual arts. My primary practice has been a hybrid of photography and drawing. Understanding the concept of “drawing from life” has been an ongoing quest for me in my work. No longer a question of simply drawing from a nude or from a photograph, this question addresses, for me, how media influences the formation of identity. What does it mean to ‘draw from life’? I realize the word ‘draw’ has a larger meaning than putting a pencil to page.
Ready for Love is a portrait of Lorri Moore and yet I am fully aware of the connections her story has to my own history. I also realized hers is a universal tale that extends beyond my or even her own story. In this film, we used archival, narrative and documentary style footage. We cast actors to play her as a girl and as a young woman. We scripted and blocked some of Lorri’s own scenes. I learned a lot about the precarious line between narrative and documentary. This seemed appropriate for this particular story which explores a life lived on and off screen.
